Parts of a Seed

The seed contains the embryo of the new plant, with a supply of food for the embryo
until it has formed sufficient roots and leaves to obtain its own food. The food, endosperm, may be in the seed leaves or it may be outside the seed leaves and be absorbed when the seed germinates. To start germination, the seed leaves absorb water and swell, and the radicle emerges, followed by the plumule.

For this week, you will write your reflection on our school canteen food. Here are some questions that will help you to write your reflection:

1. Do you eat in the school canteen? Why? Why not?
2. Which is your favourite stall? Why?
3. Do you think the food and drinks sold in canteen are healthy? Give your reasons.
4. Do you think the food and drinks sold in the canteen are clean? Give your reasons.
5. What are some of the healthier food and drinks sold by canteen vendors?
6. Could suggest some healthy food to be included in our school canteen?
7. How do you think we can make our canteen a more conducive place for pupils and teachers?

You may click on the picture links below to find out more about a balanced diet and guidelines for healthy food:

I wish to see everyone reflecting and writing on the topic. This is a journal. So one or two lines is not enough. You will need to write more than that. You can add some pictures or links to your reflection to make it more interesting for readers of your blog.

Mid-Digital Hair

Do you have mid-digital hair on your fingers?

Look at your fingers as having three segments - top, middle and bottom. If
even one tiny hair is present on the middle segment of any finger, you have
mid-digital hair. (This can be difficult to determine so look closely.) Mid-digital
hair is inherited.

Survey

Dear Students,

Pls visit here to complete a survey.

I know we are having to complete many surveys recently. You know what that means? It means that there are people interested to know more about our class! So, let's present the best we are to others. At our best behaviour - in school or outside of school. In school, we represent 5.3. Outside of school, we represent Anderson Primary School.

Remember class, we have to be respectful and courteous to others at all times.

Binary Fission

Click on picture for more wiki information!

Binary fission is the form of asexual reproduction in single-celled organisms by which one cell divides into two cells of the same size. Binary fission is asexual; the organism splits directly into two equal-sized offsprings, each with a copy of the parent's genetic material. Binary fission is a common type of reproduction in single-celled organisms. Some examples include bacteria, paramecium, algae.

Personal Response 3 : Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease

For Week 6:

Recently there has been an outbreak of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD) in Singapore. We have a few cases in our school too. To understand more of the disease and to learn how to prevent it, you can go to the links given :

You can also go to this link below to find answers to the frequently asked questions :

Here are some questions which can help you write your personal response:

1. What is HFMD?
2. How can you tell whether your friend has HFMD?
3. Is it true that HFMD occur only among children below five? Why?
4. How do you prevent yourself from contracting this disease?
5. Do you know of anyone who has contracted this disease?
6. How does someone with HFMD help to prevent the spread of the disease?
7. What advice would you give to all children to prevent HFMD?

Post your personal response regarding this topic. Do not write just one or two sentences. Use the questions to guide your response and I encourage you to write more.

Internal & External Fertilisation

Extracted from HERE:

Internal fertilisation occurs when the male deposits sperm directly into the female's body. Most land animals, including insects, reptiles, birds, and mammals, reproduce in this way. In almost all mammals and some reptiles, the embryo develops inside the female's body after fertilisation. However, in birds and most reptiles, the embryo develops outside her body. The female lays an egg in which the embryo develops. The egg is protected by a shell and contains material that nourishes the growing embryo.

Among animals, fertilisation may be external or internal. During external fertilisation, male and female sex cells unite outside the female's body. This process occurs in water. The male releases sperm into the water at about the same time that the female releases eggs. Some sperm come into contact with eggs and fertilise them. Almost all aquatic invertebrates and some vertebrates, including the majority of fish and amphibians, reproduce in this way.

The eggs of most fish are fertilised outside the female's body. A female releases her eggs into the water at the same time that a male releases his sperm. Some sperm come in contact with some of the eggs, and fertilisation takes place. The entire process during which eggs and sperm are released into the water and the eggs are fertilised is called spawning. Almost all bony fish reproduce in this way.

Sharks, rays, chimaeras, and a few bony fish, such as guppies and mosquito fish, reproduce in a different manner. The eggs of these fish are fertilised inside the female. For internal fertilisation to occur, males and females must mate. After fertilisation, the females of some species release their eggs into the water before they hatch. Other females hatch the eggs inside their bodies and so give birth to living young. Fish that bear living young include many sharks, rays, and guppies.

Reflection 3: Friendship

Hello Class!

For Week 5:
On Friday, 11 April 2008, we celebrated International Friendship Day. Some of your friends came in their ethnic costumes, some in their sports attire to show that through sports, friendships can be forged. We had some very interesting activites in school that day. Do you remember what they were?

This week's reflection is about friendship. You may reflect on the activities for International Friendship Day too. But here are some questions that will help you to write your reflection:

1. What do you mean by 'friendship'?
2. Why do you think it is important to have friends?
3. How can you develop friendship with others?
4. Do you think it is important for Singaporeans to be friendly with people of other countries?
Why?
5. Did you enjoy the activities during our school International Friendship Day?
6. Which activities did you enjoy? Why?
7. What other activities can you suggest to be included in the International Friendship Day celebration next year?

Let us think this through and write a nice reflection about what we think of our friendship. I am sure we have much to say about our friends and what we experience with them. You may include photographs in your post too!

Looking forward to reading your reflection on friendship! =)

Road Safety Park

Today, we went to Road Safety Park at East Coast. Some of our classmates were chosen to be marshalls, cyclists, motorists, and pedestrians. Each student was given a sheet of paper to complete tasks. The place was a simulated area where students get to learn about road safety rules. This is important so that when you grow up, you will practise road safety. Roads are dangerous for all users - it does not matter whether you are a pedestrian, a driver, a cyclist. There is always a possiblity of getting hurt. Hence, we need to always be alert while on the road, even on pavements. Look out for oncoming traffic. Raise your hand while crossing roads as some motorists may not be able to see you.

I hope all of you enjoyed yourselves and learnt something new today.

Personal Response 2 : Courtesy

Hi Everyone,

We are going to talk about Courtesy this week. We should always follow the Ethic of Reciprocity (the Golden Rule) which simply means to "treat others as you would like to be treated." We all like to be treated with respect and courtesy. If we respect our friends, our friends would treat us with the same respect. We all want to be courteous people. So to begin for others to treat you with courtesy, start with yourself to treat others with the same respect as well! =)

For Week 4:
First, click on the picture to go to the link:

Read the four fables and give your opinion and comments about them. To guide you in writing your personal response, here are some questions :

1. What does 'courtesy' mean to you?
2. Which one of the fables impresses you most? Why?
3. Do you think the pupils in our class are courteous? In what way/ways are they courteous or discourteous?
4. How can we show our courtesy towards our friends, school mates, family members and others?
